A pit is essentially a sinus tract traveling under the skin that doesn't belong there a pit's tract running underneath the skin can be either short or long and convoluted, with extensive branching.
Preauricular skin tags and ear pits are associated with permanent hearing impairment in newborns. In most cases, these are normal. Preauricular pits, sinuses, and tags are not unusual in the pediatric population and are often an incidental physical exam finding.
