Preauricular skin tags and ear pits are associated with permanent hearing impairment in newborns. In most cases, these are normal. Preauricular pits, sinuses, and tags are not unusual in the pediatric population and are often an incidental physical exam finding.

A preauricular pit or opening is the beginning of a sinus tract that weaves itself underneath the skin of the ear.
